Dr. Beth Grosshans is the author of the parenting book Beyond Time Out: From Chaos to Calm, published by Sterling in 2010. In writing her book, Dr. Beth Grosshans drew on experience as a clinical psychologist, a private consultant to schools and teachers, and a teacher education instructor at Princeton Montessori School.
Developed by Dr. Maria Montessori more than 100 years ago, the Montessori Method has emerged as a successful educational model at learning institutions across the world. Montessori education offers a number of benefits over traditional education, most of which center on student freedom and meticulous classroom planning.
Because Montessori education treats each child as a unique individual, students have an opportunity to explore their own learning styles and advance through the curriculum at their own pace. Although teachers choose the range of activities available to students, students have the freedom to select their activities within set parameters. As such, students learn the importance of seeking knowledge and pursuing the things that interest them. As students become older, they earn stature and begin serving as role models for younger children at their schools.
